We’re often asked about the origin of the name “Lumeen.” We really like this name because it’s personal and reflects the company’s mission.

Coming up with a name for a startup is no easy task. After all, the best names are catchy, short, and memorable. They also need to be available and unique so they can be easily identified online. And the icing on the cake is finding a name that, on top of all that, connects to the company’s business and history. It was a long and difficult process, but “Lumeen” embodies all these qualities.

The idea for Lumeen was born from two brothers’ desire to combine their expertise to offerGetaway grandmotherGetaway care homes, momentsGetaway . Robin, who has a background in nursing, and me, a tech enthusiast. virtual reality care homes—a crazy idea, but one that makes perfect sense. Visiting Venice, Japan, and the pyramids of Egypt; swimming with dolphins, marveling at the Northern Lights, or revisiting familiar landscapes from their childhood… What could be better for these isolated and dependent individuals? When we saw how much joy our prototype brought to our grandmother and the residents of her care homes, we decided to develop our concept so that as many people as possible could benefit from it.

"Lumeen" was an instant hit with everyone. The "Eureka" moment came after three months of research, about ten brainstorming sessions, a list of more than 200 ideas, and a weekend of team inspiration in the mountains. This name pays tribute to the person who inspired us and reminds us of our mission. Our grandmother’s name is Lucienne, and we love our Grandma Lulu very much. Our mission is to brighten the daily lives of vulnerable people. Lulu + illuminate = Lumeen.

Today, we continue to explore the therapeutic potential of virtual reality are looking into other medical applications of this technology.
