Solidarity innovation: Lumeen, elected best project of the year by Handicap International

Each year, Handicap International, the INSA Foundation and Dynergie invite citizens from here and elsewhere to come and “change the world” for 24 hours of collective intelligence. This year, they have chosen to reward companies that, through their solidarity innovation projects, contribute to this change. For this first edition of the Solidarity Innovation Awards, the jury chose to highlight the challenges of aging and disability by rewarding the social virtual reality solution from the startup Lumeen.

All concerned

“This is a project that touches me a lot because I am a caregiver for my dad who is suffering from a neurodegenerative disease” confides Marjory Wachtel, co-founder of Capelia Impact, when she presents the Solidarity Innovation of the Year award to Lumeen. By 2050, more than 4 million people will lose their autonomy*, twice as many as today. The Lumeen solution therefore meets a real social challenge since more and more of us will be confronted with dependent family members. The establishments in the medico-social sector that welcome these people will have to adapt their care practices. “When a person enters a nursing home, they will lose more and more autonomy, adds Robin Metgy, an EHPAD nurse and co-founder of Lumeen. As a healthcare team, we need to put in place actions to preserve it as much as possible and for as long as possible.”

Whether for old age or for disability, new technologies can be a major ally in stimulating cognitive functions. Each year, more than 10,000 Lumeen virtual reality workshops are carried out and allow medico-social professionals to provide well-being, promote exchanges and social ties or even stimulate the memory of their residents. The jury was seduced by the possibilities offered by the Lumeen solution but especially by the concrete impact it already has on the 300 establishments equipped.

100% made in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Digital Region Campus was an ideal place to reward this innovative startup founded by 3 Lyonnais. Fully rooted in its territory, it has collaborated since the beginning with nursing homes in the region to build and improve its social and therapeutic virtual reality solution. As early as 2019, a partnership with the Hospices Civils de Lyon gave birth to an application to act on anxiety and pain through exposure to virtual reality.

Since 2020, thanks to the support of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, Lumeen has been working hand in hand with the CEM of Dommartin and the Richard Foundation, which work in the disability sector. This collaboration makes it possible to adapt the Lumeen solution so that it responds even better to the specificities of disability.

In 2021, Lumeen and the City of Lyon are joining forces to set up an inclusive cultural system: to make the Festival of Lights accessible to prevented audiences through a virtual reality experience.

From its headquarters in Gerland, the startup intends to continue its development and promote its know-how and the benefits of its solution throughout Europe as early as 2023.
