Culture Beyond the Walls, Thanks to virtual reality

Cultural Accessibility: A Legal and Societal Imperative for Museums
In France, cultural institutions have both a legal and a moral obligation to ensure accessibility. The law of February 11, 2005, requires public institutions to guarantee physical, cognitive, and cultural accessibility to all individuals, regardless of their limitations.
Beyond the regulatory framework, the issue is above all a human one: it is about combating social isolation and enabling everyone to remain an active participant in their cultural life. To embody a truly inclusive institution, cultural venues must now rethink their outreach efforts. Thanks to virtual reality VR), the concept of “reaching out beyond the walls” takes on a whole new dimension: it is no longer just a matter of moving works of art, but of transporting the viewer to the very heart of the experience.
But why is access to art so vital for underserved audiences? Because beyond the sense of wonder, culture heals.
Museum Therapy: When Culture Becomes a Form of Care
The impact of art on health is no longer just a hunch—it is a documented scientific fact. More than 3,000 studies listed by the WHO demonstrate that exposure to culture plays a crucial role in the prevention and treatment of diseases. As Nathalie Bondil, a pioneer in art therapy, points out, art possesses real therapeutic power: it reduces stress, alleviatesanxiety stimulates cognitive functions.
The physiological benefits are tangible: just 35 minutes of cultural immersion leads to a significant drop in cortisol levels (the stress hormone), stabilizes blood pressure, and soothes emotions. For people in hospitals or care homes, escaping into a work of art is not just a pastime—it’s a source of well-being that stimulates cognitive functions and reducesanxiety.
However, for this “cultural medicine” to make its way into hospital rooms, a technological platform was needed that could overcome the barrier of distance.
virtual reality: Culture That Comes to You
For people in hospitals, care homes long-term care facilities, getting out to visit a museum, attend a show, or explore a landmark is often difficult.
Since its founding, Lumeen has been driven by a strong conviction: to enable people who would otherwise be unable to experience culture—even outside of traditional venues—through its system consisting of Headsets and a control tablet.
This care recipients the opportunity to visit, explore, and enjoy immersive cultural experiences without having to travel, making concerts, iconic events, and tours accessible everywhere—including right in the midst of their care journeys.
VR does not replace on-site cultural experiences:
👉 It extends them and makes them accessible to those who are otherwise unable to experience them.
To date, Lumeen has equipped more than 900 medical and medical-social facilities in France, making culture more accessible on a large scale.

Strong Cultural Partnerships for True Accessibility

Since 2019, Lumeen has been partnering with major players to produce content that combines on-the-ground expertise with audiovisual know-how. This approach, which has been further developed within the Heritage Incubator of the Centre des Monuments Nationaux (CMN), allows us to offer more than twenty exclusive experiences covering a variety of themes:
- ⚓ Museums: In partnership with the National Maritime Museum, we offer tours of various sites, such as Brest and Paris.
- 🎵Classical and Contemporary Music: Alongside the Colonne Orchestra, immersive concerts—such as a Mozart concerto—offer the chance to experience a captivating musical performance.
- 🎭 The Art of Live Performance: With the Cirque d’Hiver Bouglione, an immersive performance invites you to discover the world of the circus, right up close to the stage and behind the scenes.

“The Lumeen system is particularly useful for off-site cultural outreach programs. It’s truly something different, and it’s very interesting for field workers.”
“The tour information is excellent because it’s simple and precise. It allows visitors of all backgrounds to enjoy a quick yet comprehensive tour.”
— Grégory Gerberon, Armelle Baduel, Antoinette Gorioux, and the staff of the Château d’If, CMN
