Social Innovation: Lumeen Named Best Project of the Year by Handicap International

Every year, Handicap International, the INSA Foundation, and Dynergie invite people from here and abroad to come “change the world” during 24 hours of collective intelligence. This year, they chose to recognize companies that, through their social innovation projects, are contributing to this change. For this first edition of the Social Innovation Awards, the jury chose to highlight the challenges of aging and disability by recognizing the virtual reality solution by the startup Lumeen.
This affects everyone
“This is a project that means a lot to me because I care for my father, who has a neurodegenerative disease,” says Marjory Wachtel, co-founder of Capelia Impact, as she presents the Social Innovation of the Year award to Lumeen. By 2050, more than 4 million people will be losing their independence*, twice as many as today. The solution therefore addresses a real societal challenge, as more and more of us will be caring for dependent loved ones. Care sector facilities Care sector serve these individuals will need to adapt their care practices. “When a person enters a care homes, they will gradually lose their independence,” adds Robin Metgy, nurse care homes nurse care homes co-founder of Lumeen. “We, as the care team, must take steps to preserve their independence as much as possible and for as long as possible.”
Whether for the elderly or people with disabilities, new technologies can be a powerful ally in stimulating cognitive functions. Each year, more than 10,000 virtual reality workshops are held, enabling professionals in Care sector well-being, foster interaction and social connections, and stimulate the memory of their residents. The jury was impressed by the possibilities offered by the solution , but above all by the tangible impact it has already had at the 300 facilities where it is in use.

The Campus Région du Numérique was the perfect venue to honor this innovative startup founded by three Lyon natives. Deeply rooted in its local community, the company has been collaborating with care homes the region from the very beginning to develop and improve its virtual reality and therapeutic virtual reality solution . As early as 2019, a partnership with the Hospices Civils de Lyon led to the development of an app designed to help manageanxiety pain exposure to virtual reality.
Since 2020, thanks to support from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, Lumeen has been working closely with the CEM in Dommartin and the Richard Foundation, both of which are active in the disability sector. This collaboration makes it possible to adapt the solution so that it better addresses the specific needs of people with disabilities.
In 2021, Lumeen and the City of Lyon are joining forces to launch an inclusive cultural initiative: making the Festival of Lights accessible to those who are unable to attend in person through a virtual reality experience.
From its headquarters in Gerland, the startup plans to continue growing and promote its expertise and the benefits of its solution Europe starting in 2023.
